What is Placeit?

Placeit is an online mockup, video and website design template generator. It’s a plug-and-play online tool that basically combines the best elements of Canva and Photoshop to create a powerful and easy-to-use design tool for digital creators.

You can use Placeit to create business branding, graphics and videos using their already-made templates that can then be customized to your own liking.

Placeit is a hot tool for website designers since it makes it easy to create templates that can be personalized for each of their clients. It’s even easy enough to use that clients can then update and maintain their website after the web designer has created it!

Who Needs Placeit?

Placeit is the perfect tool for people that want to work with templates, rather than from scratch as that feature is not available. However, these templates can be customized in a gajillion ways to make them your own.

Placeit can be a great alternative to Canva or Photoshop for those that like starting with a template rather than coming up with every design element on their own. This can be really helpful for the creative process too!

So who needs Placeit? Anyone that’s designing websites, graphics, videos, digital products, or mock-ups for physical products can benefit from using this awesome tool.

Placeit is an excellent tool for all digital creatives, but – as we’re focusing on in this article – is especially great for those making and selling digital and physical products.

This can apply to eBook creators, print-on-demand item sellers, and these mockups can even be used for similar handmade items if you don’t want to invest in professional-looking photography.

What Are Digital Mockups?

Digital mockups are blank images of a product that then has your own logo or design added to it. They can be super helpful for brands that can’t or don’t want to use their own product photography but obviously still need product images for their website or social media.

For example, you’d use digital mockups if you were selling print-on-demand t-shirts and you didn’t want to hire models and print samples.

You could take a mockup image of a similar t-shirt and drag your logo or design onto it, creating a custom image that shows off your product as if you had taken the photos of the real product.

Mockups help buyers get a feel for the actual product that’s available for purchase, without the creator having to be a photography whiz! As you may know, first impressions and presentation are everything in the online sales world.

Good mockups can mean the difference in a sale or someone passing you up for a product that features better photography.

There are tons of different digital mockups you can have, a few examples include:

How Do You Make a Digital Mockup?

You can use a platform like Canva or Photoshop to create a mockup if you already have an image of the product you’d like to customize. There isn’t a library to choose from like you’ll find on Placeit. And a software like Photoshop can have quite the learning curve.

That being said, Placeit can be an easy solution if you’re just looking to create a simple mockup of a plain white t-shirt or putting a screenshot or logo on a cellphone representing a mobile app.

If you’re looking for more products and the ability to make the image look really professional, Placeit is the perfect tool for you. The drag-and-drop capability in addition to the wide variety of product images ensures your “product” looks perfect and is appealing to your customers.

And best of all, it’s super easy (even for beginners) to create beautiful mockups that present their products in a stunning and professional way, there’s no learning curve like there is with a software like Photoshop!

What Mockups Can You Create With Placeit?

You can use Placeit mockups for so many products, including:

…. and more, and more, and more! The list is seriously never-ending it seems! You’d have a hard time not finding what you’re looking for when it comes to product mockups.

You can also use Placeit for:

Benefits of Using Placeit Over Other Platforms

Placeit is a great service that offers some really great advantages over other platforms like Smartmockups or Photoshop. While they all have their strengths, Placeit has an edge when it comes to these qualities:

Canva is a platform that we at Modtrepreneur use a ton for graphics, pins and other images.

However, when it comes to mockup capability (and all the other features Placeit offers), Placeit is a clear winner when it comes to displaying physical and digital product mockups.

How to Create a Mockup with Placeit

Making a mockup with Placeit is super simple, and very intuitive. But for first-time users it helps to have a tutorial to guide you through the process.

Here’s how to create a Placeit mockup:

Step 1: Create an account on Placeit

If you haven’t already, you must create a Placeit account and sign up for a subscription in order to download your image or mockup.

If you are only going to need a mockup or two, or just want to test it out for your new online store without committing to a subscription, you can bypass the subscription and purchase designs individually for a one-time purchase of $7.95.

There are also some free designs available for download, but this list is not very extensive.

If you’re an Etsy seller, dropshipping business owner or print-on-demand item seller, you’ll likely be creating multiple designs per month (after all, quantity tends to be the name of the game in those niches). In this station, an annual subscription is going to give you the most bang for your buck!

You can sign up for Placeit here!

Step 2: Choose which items you’ll be using for the mockup

If you don’t already have an idea of what you want to create, make sure you do your product research and choose which items you’ll be using for the mockup.

It can be helpful to scroll through Placeit and see what items they offer so you know what you’ll be designing for.

There are loads of different products on Placeit that you can choose a mockup for (see the above section “What Mockups Can You Create With Placeit?” for a list of options or just  pop over to Placeit and scroll through the navigation menus yourself!

You can also use the search bar to search for specific items. Once you find a mockup you like, just click it to go to the next step: customization.

Step 3: Create your design

While you can create a design on Placeit with text and importing an image, you may find that creating one on Canva and downloading it before uploading it to Placeit is an easier process if you’re looking to make something from scratch, or if you have experience with Canva already and can quickly design on there.

This is completely personal preference though. I like to batch create my designs on Canva since I am always using that platform anyway and I’m used to it, so I can work on it quickly.

Then I’ll download it with a transparent background before I upload to whichever products on Placeit that I’m planning to sell. You can also use Photoshop for this stage, though if you’re a beginner I definitely recommend Canva for its user-friendliness and ease of use!

If you want to create a design on Placeit, you absolutely can! In fact, they have some super cool templates that you can customize. To create a design for your product, go to the navigation at the top of the page and click “Designs” then the applicable category.

If you don’t see what you’re looking for here, go to the search bar and type in what you’re trying to design. For example, you could type in “Mug designs” to get to mug design templates (see above for screenshot of this example).

From there, you’ll simply select the design template that interests you and you can continue to customize it on the next page. You can change the text, graphics, colors and more to create something totally unique!

Again, I prefer Canva because I’m used to it and I feel like there’s more options to create something one-of-a-kind but Placeit’s design customization is pretty robust and will be sufficient for the majority of digital product designs.

Once you’ve created your perfect product design image, download it and move on to the next step.

Step 4: Upload your design image to the Placeit mockup product of your choosing

Once you’ve chosen your product and designed & downloaded your image, it’s time to upload it. Click the product to move onto the customization phase.

Next, if you chose to create a design outside of Placeit, click “Insert Image,” on the left-side of the screen, then “Upload From Your Device” to upload your downloaded design image.

If you didn’t create your design outside of Placeit, you can create one within it by selecting the options on the left-hand side for “+Text” and “Add Graphic” on the right to create your design.

As you can see, we used a free template for a pillow to illustrate this. We simply uploaded our logo and voila! A Modtrepreneur pillow mockup is ready to go in just seconds!

Step 5: Change the product color & customize

You can also change the product color (any color, you can even select a “custom” color to get it just right), resize your image and add additional graphics and text if you wish.

This stage of the customization process is easy to play around with designs and options to create your perfect product mockup. Just make sure it matches the product that you’re actually selling so people are getting an accurate representation of their purchase item!

You will have more or less customization options depending on the product you choose. In this example of a pillow, we really just have color and resizing options, in addition to adding more text or graphics.

But if you were making a magazine or eBook for example (pictured above), you’d be able to change the background, change the page colors, drag and drop images, etc.

Step 6: Download your mockup

Now for the easy part, click “Download” at the top right of the screen to download your mockup masterpiece. You can then upload it to whatever website, platform, social media, or storefront you’re selling or marketing on!

Note: If it isn’t a free mockup or template, you will need to create an account and subscription to download your mockup. Please refer to step 1.

If you haven’t already set up a subscription, however, you can download the mockup for a one-time purchase of $7.95.

When you click the download button, you’ll see the following popup where you can either purchase that single mockup for $7.95. Or, you can subscribe to a monthly or annual plan at this stage as well.
