How do you know if your Rich Pins are working correctly?

What are Rich Pins?

These special pins are basically “enriched” with additional information that has been gathered from the meta data on your site. This is then reflected in your Pin.

This additional information helps Pinterest better categorize and “read” your Pin so that it can display it better in search results.

Why Should You Use Rich Pins?

A large amount of top-performing Pins are actually “Rich Pins.” Enabling this future can boost your Pin in search results as Pinterest finds more ways to show it as relevant content.

It also has the added benefit of updating automatically if you change anything on your website that would affect the Pin. Namely, the SEO/meta description, blog post title, or the price (if it’s a product).

Some other major benefits of using Rich Pins include:

Different Types of Rich Pins

There are 3 different types of rich pins: recipe, article and product. Pinterest will pull in and sync different information from you website based on the type of Pin. The three types are:

Recipe Pins

Pinterest will pull information like ingredients, cook time, serving size, ratings, diet preference and more directly from the recipe on your website. This type of pin is great for food bloggers, cookbook authors, etc. And as a bonus, Pinterest automatically updates the Rich Pin if any changes are made to the recipe on your site!

Article Pins

This Pin is most typical for blog posts or news articles. For Article Pins, Pinterest pulls information like the headline (or title) of the blog post, the author, and the description or excerpt that states what the article is about (and hopefully includes all those fabulous keywords that will help people find you on Pinterest). Just like with the Recipe Pin, if any changes are made to your article or blog post, Pinterest will automatically update the Article Rich Pin.

Product Pins

Pinterest pulls in the current price, availability, and product description for Product Pins. For US and UK-based businesses, Pinterest will only show Product Rich Pin information if your business is on their list of verified merchants and if the product is actually in stock.

How to Enable Rich Pins on Squarespace

To enable Rich Pins on Squarespace, you’ll first need to claim your Squarespace website (don’t worry it’s simple). To claim your Squarespace website on Pinterest:

1. Log in to your Pinterest Business Account

2. Click your profile icon in the top right corner, then select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.

3. Select “Claim”

4. Enter the URL of your website, then click “Claim”

5. Select “Add HTML Tag” from the pop-up window and click “Next”

6. Copy the HTML Tag (make sure to keep this page/tab open, you’ll be coming back to it in a few steps)

7. In a new tab, login to your Squarespace account and select your site from the main dashboard

8. Select “Settings” > “Advanced” > “Code Injection” (note: you will need a business plan or higher for the option to add a code injection)

9. Paste the copied HTML Tag into the Header Section then click “Save”

10. Go back to the Pinterest tab you kept open and click “Next” > “Submit” > “Done”

Verify that your site has been claimed. You can do this by looking at your Pinterest profile and seeing if there is a globe with a checkmark on your Pinterest profile next to your website.

Now that your site has been claimed, you can proceed with enabling Rich Pins by:

1. Validate Your Site

Using the Rich Pin Validator, you’ll need to validate your site. Once you’re on the webpage, copy. & paste in the URL of one of your blog posts.

It doesn’t matter which blog post you choose as it will apply to all of them once your site is validated. Don’t use your homepage as this can cause issues with the validator, it needs to be a page you created full of content.

Next, click “Validate.”

2. Apply

Once your site is validated, you’ll want to click “Apply Now” found on the next page. Then you’re officially done!

It may take Pinterest a few hours (sometimes days) to set up Rich Pins and approve your account.

You will get an email notification once they approve your website and your pins will now be distributed in the Rich Pins format.

How do you know if your Rich Pins are working correctly?

If you want to verify that your Rich Pins are working correctly, there are a few ways to check.

Option 1: Try searching for your website on Pinterest. If your pins appear with the extra information attached, then you can see that Rich Pins are in fact working!

Option 2: Inspect the code of one of your pins. To do this, right-click on a pin and select “Inspect.” Next, look for the section of code that contains “p:domain_verify.” If that section contains your website’s verification token, then your Rich Pins are working. If you don’t see that section, or if you see an error message instead, then Rich Pins are not working for you and you may want to troubleshoot with Pinterest customer service or support articles.

Important note: If you have not shared any Pins on Pinterest since adding Rich Pins, I would go to your website and share an image from it first and see if it shows up as a Rich Pin. Then you know it’s working just as it should!
